Overview

The Machame route, also referred to as the Whiskey route, is one of the most popular routes on Kilimanjaro and a favorite for Kilimanjaro and Safaris Africa Africa. Despite being a tough climb compared to the Marangu route, the Machame route has one of the highest summit success rates given the topography of the route which allows climbers to “trek high & sleep low” hence making it a more favorable route for acclimatization. Unlike the Marangu route which is a gradual ascent, the Machame route is has steeper trails and climbers walk longer distances. This route offers some of the most spectacular scenery while on the mountain. The Machame route starts in the south west side of the mountain and proceeds steeply north, traversing the Shira plateau and eventually joining the Shira and Lemosho routes at the Shira camp. The Machame route can be done in minimum 6 days but a 7 day trek is recommended so climbers are well rested and acclimatized before making the final ascent to the summit.

Trekking to the Top of Africa!

I just finished the 6 day Machame route and truly had the experience of a lifetime!! The entire journey was amazing and it was our guides that ensured that we made it to the summit and had a lot of laughs along the way. The leadership of August Urio was outstanding. He provided so much guidance, knowledge and encouragement. With support from our assistant guides - Ewald Urio, Thadey Nguma and Godfrid Ngowi - all 8 of us made it to the summit! It was the hardest 6 hours of my life but they took such good care of us resulting in a euphoric feeling that I will never forget. All of the of the other support - porters, cooks, waiters were also top notch. The food was plentiful and delicious and having a private toilet (aka wifi) added a level of comfort. I highly recommend climbing with Ultimate and make sure you request our guide team!…

6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking via Machame Route

Climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in January 2022 on the 6 day via Machame route with Kilimanjaro and Safaris Africa. The route was very scenic, passing through a range of different landscapes. Summit day in particular was more difficult than the other days - we started hiking around midnight and the conditions were very cold and windy (~100kmph winds). However our group of 8 had four guides (William - the lead guide, Rajipa, Saimon and Dominic) and we felt very safe in their capable hands. On summit day, our team of guides went above and beyond to help us reach the summit - they helped with everything from pulling water bottles and snacks out of our backpacks, tying laces, adjusting headlamps to singing mountain songs and chanting words of encouragement to keep our spirits up. There were two hikers in the group that felt unwell from day 2, but the guides went above and beyond to help them (carrying their day packs, monitoring and conducting extra health checks, delivering food to their tents etc). It was comforting to know that had we been unwell, we would have also been well looked after. We also have to commend the porters and cook, with a special shout out to the guys that looked after the toilet, tents and our waiter. They all worked tirelessly to make the hike as comfortable as possible for us. I highly recommend doing the Kilimanjaro hike and recommend the team and guides (and in particular the lead guide, William) we used at Kilimanjaro and Safaris Africa!…
